Rapper T.I. and his wife, singer-songwriter Tameka “Tiny” Harris, have won a massive $71 million in a lawsuit against MGA Entertainment. The couple claimed the toy company infringed on the intellectual property of their teen pop group, the OMG Girlz, with MGA’s popular L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. doll line.
According to the Daily Journal, the jury awarded them $17.8 million in actual damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages after a three-week trial in a federal court in Santa Ana, California.
This marks the couple’s third attempt to sue MGA. Their first trial in early 2023 ended in a mistrial after jurors were exposed to excluded testimony about cultural appropriation. A second trial resulted in a win for MGA, but a Supreme Court ruling in June 2023 allowed the case to be retried, giving more significance to consumer confusion in intellectual property disputes.
